Sinopsis

Prepare to go to hell and back again in this double feature installment of one of the most iconic horror franchises of all time from horror master Clive Barker! See how it all began in the classic original HELLRAISER where Pinhead is introduced to the world, and the equally brilliant HELLBOUND sequel that proves there are no limits!

HELLRAISER (1987, 94 Mins.): From horror master Clive Barker comes this chilling nightmare featuring the first appearance of the hideous, demonic Pinhead. A creepy, thrillingly perverse tale straddling heaven and hell, extreme pleasure and unbearable pain, HELLRAISER will haunt your dreams.

HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER 2 (1988, 99 Mins.): In 1988, it emerged as the shocking follow-up to the film that redefined the face of horror. Two decades later, it remains the most brutally original sequel in horror film history. Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence and Kenneth Cranham co-star in this hit sequel from executive producer Clive Barker that experiences the flesh like no other. The time to play has come again: Surrender yourself to the infernal labyrinth of HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II.

The Kings of Summer

The Kings of Summer Review

Sinopsis

THE KINGS OF SUMMER is a unique coming-of-age comedy about three teenage friends - Joe (Nick Robinson), Patrick (Gabriel Basso) and the eccentric and unpredictable Biaggio (Moises Arias) - who, in the ultimate act of independence, decide to spend their summer building a house in the woods and living off the land. Free from their parents rules, their idyllic summer quickly becomes a test of friendship as each boy learns to appreciate the fact that family - whether it is the one you are born into or the one you create - is something you can't run away from.Perched in a nice, bittersweet spot between sentimental and zany, The Kings of Summer wonderfully captures a fantasy of youth and free time--it could only happen in a slightly off-reality la-la land, but that turns out to be a pleasant place to visit. 15-year-old Joe (Nick Robinson) determines to occupy a ramshackle collection of building materials (let's call the resulting mess a cabin) set in the middle of the woods; his buddy Patrick (Gabriel Basso) comes along for the ride during the summer break. Both guys are sick of their parents, even if their troubles are never so bad the movie would lose its daffy undertone. There's a third wheel: Biaggio (Moises Arias), a strange and hilarious kid who just keeps hanging around long enough to be allowed in to the idyll. What follows is a very peculiar mix of styles (gauzy nature photography, boom-boom sitcom-style humor, bittersweet teen-movie angst), but director Jordan Vogt-Roberts keeps these different notes in harmony for most of the film's running time. Add the rock-solid support of comedy wizards like Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, and Mary Lynn Rajskub, and the movie finds a winning beat. At its best, The Kings of Summer is like a Young Adult novel about getting away from it all, but with a better soundtrack. --Robert Horton

Sinopsis

A best-selling author's newest novel is literally driving readers insane. When the author inexplicably vanishes, a special investigator hired to track him down crosses the barrier between fact and fiction and enters a terrifying world from which there is no escape. Directed by horror legend John Carpenter (Vampires). The mind-bending worlds of author H.P. Lovecraft have long interested horror directors, but the films have rarely successfully captured his nightmarish mix of madness and mythology. John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness is not directly based on Lovecraft's work, but screenwriter Michael De Luca draws his inspiration from Lovecraft's Cthulu mythology and then adds his own ingenious twists. John Trent (Sam Neill), an insurance investigator recently fitted for a straightjacket, tells his story to a psychiatrist. Hired to track down the missing pop-horror phenomena Sutter Cane, a Stephen King-like author whose fans are literally made for his books, Trent finds the supposedly fictional Hobb's End. He watches the town collapse into madness, murder, and monstrous transformations: the fantastic horrors of Cane's novels played out in front of his eyes. "Reality isn't what it used to be," deadpans one zombielike townsperson. In fact, it is how Cane writes it--but is he Devil, dark oracle, or simply a preacher in the service of an evil that grows stronger with every soul his books convert? The script never quite gets a grip on the blurry relationship between fact and fiction, but those details fade in the face of Carpenter's demented imagery, shiver-inducing twists, and dark wit. It's more eerie mind game than straight-out horror, a portrait of a world gone mad, and Carpenter relishes every hallucinatory moment. --Sean Axmaker

The Croods (Blu-ray / DVD + Digital Copy)

The Croods (Blu-ray / DVD + Digital Copy) Review

Sinopsis

Join the first modern family as they embark on the journey of a lifetime across a spectacular and unforgettable landscape. When their cave is destroyed, everything the Croods have ever known is rocked by seismic shifts and generational clashes as they discover an incredible new world filled with fantastic creatures - and their world is changed forever. If they don’t evolve, they’ll be history!

Grug:
The hardest working father in history. For Grug, there are no weekends, holidays or sick days. Like most dads, Grug is fiercely protective of his family, and his hyper-vigilance is defined by his “fear is good; change is bad” philosophy. But in order to keep his family truly safe, Grug must learn the difference between surviving and living.

Ugga: Grug’s mate. She’s every bit as solid and sure as Grug, but over their many years of raising their children together, Ugga has always deferred to her husband’s authority. When she suddenly finds herself in the position of being a cave-wife with no cave, Ugga is forced to make the right decision for her family -- even if it means changing the way they live.

Eep: Grug’s rebellious teenage daughter is trying to drag her family kicking and screaming into the future. Her nagging feeling that there might be more to life outside the family cave is confirmed when the Croods embark on a journey of a lifetime.

Thunk: Grug’s son is 6-feet, 3-inches tall, 280 pounds, and 9 years old. Thunk wants to be a great hunter like his dad, but Thunk can’t hit the broad side of a mammoth.

Gran: Grug’s feisty mother-in-law is truly ancient, at age 45. Her twilight years haven’t diminished her irascibility, or her instincts for survival.

Sandy: The youngest of the Croods, four-year-old Sandy is as feral and vicious as a baby wildcat. In a dangerous world full of creatures trying to take a bite out of her, Sandy is not afraid to bite back.

Guy: A charming teenage boy who makes dazzling discoveries (like fire and shoes), Guy is a catalyst for change. His inventive ideas ultimately expose the Croods to new possibilities... and a new world.

Belt: This sloth is the world’s first pet, and Guy’s best friend. Belt can't talk, but his signature sing-song expression of doom – “Da da daaaaaaaa!” -- speaks volumes.

Even breakfast is an adventure when you're the last surviving prehistoric family, and the conviction that fear keeps you alive and curiosity will get you killed definitely drives the Crood clan. But Eep (Emma Stone), who's in many ways a typical teenager intent on testing her boundaries and the resolve of her parents (Nicolas Cage and Catherine Keener), yearns for more than hiding out in a dark cave all day. Eep sneaks out of the cave one night and almost gets the whole family killed, but her path crosses with a boy named Guy (Ryan Reynolds), who it seems is destined to change everything for the Crood family. Forced to flee their cave home after it's destroyed, the Croods reluctantly follow Guy on a perilous journey that leads them to discover a whole new world full of breathtaking views, fascinating creatures, and blood-stirring adventure. The animation is lush and gorgeous and the abundance of physical and slapstick humor, especially from Nicolas Cage as Grug and Cloris Leachman as Gran, keeps the plot moving and viewers chuckling throughout the film. What the Crood family's journey eventually reveals is twofold: that focusing on living life and following the light is a viable alternative to hiding in the darkness and that anyone can change. (Ages 8 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

John Cassavetes: Five Films (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

John Cassavetes: Five Films (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] Review

>

Sinopsis

John Cassavetes was a genius, a visionary, and the progenitor of American independent film, but that doesn’t begin to get at the generosity of his art. A former theater actor fascinated by the power of improvisation, Cassavetes brought his search for truth in performance to the screen. The five films in this collection—all of which the director maintained total control over by financing them himself and making them outside the studio system—are electrifying and compassionate creations, populated by all manner of humanity: beatniks, hippies, businessmen, actors, housewives, strippers, club owners, gangsters, children. Cassavetes has often been called an actor’s director, but this body of work—even greater than the sum of its extraordinary parts—shows him to be an audience’s director.

SHADOWS (1959)

  • 82 minutes
  • Black & White
  • Monaural
  • 1.33:1 aspect ratio John Cassavetes’s directorial debut revolves around a romance in New York City between Lelia (Lelia Goldoni), a light-skinned black woman, and Tony (Anthony Ray), a white man. The relationship is put in jeopardy when Tony meets Lelia’s darker-skinned jazz singer brother, Hugh (Hugh Hurd), and discovers that her racial heritage is not what he thought it was. Shot on location in Manhattan with a mostly nonprofessional cast and crew, Shadows is a penetrating work that is widely considered the forerunner of the American independent film movement.

    FACES (1968)

  • 130 minutes
  • Black & White
  • Monaural
  • 1.66:1 aspect ratio John Cassavetes puts a disintegrating marriage under the microscope in the searing Faces. Shot in high-contrast 16 mm black and white, the film follows the futile attempts of the captain of industry Richard (The Godfather’s John Marley) and his wife, Maria (Taking Off’s Lynn Carlin), to escape the anguish of their empty relationship in the arms of others. Featuring astonishingly nervy performances from Marley, Carlin, and Cassavetes regulars Gena Rowlands (A Woman Under the Influence) and Seymour Cassel (Rushmore), Faces confronts modern alienation and the battle of the sexes with a brutal honesty and compassion rarely matched in cinema.

A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE (1974)

  • 147 minutes
  • Color
  • Monaural
  • 1.85:1 aspect ratio) This uncompromising portrait of domestic turmoil details the emotional breakdown of a suburban housewife and her family’s struggle to save her from herself. Gena Rowlands (Faces) and Peter Falk (Wings of Desire) give unforgettably harrowing performances as a married couple deeply in love but unable to express their ardor in terms the other can understand. This landmark American film is perhaps the most beloved work from the extraordinary John Cassavetes.

THE KILLING OF A CHINESE BOOKIE (1976 version)

  • 135 minutes
  • Color
  • Monaural
  • 1.85:1 aspect ratio, 1978 version
  • 108 minutes
  • Color
  • Monaural
  • 1.85:1 aspect ratio) John Cassavetes engages with film noir in his own inimitable style with The Killing of a Chinese Bookie. Ben Gazzara (Anatomy of a Murder) brilliantly portrays a gentleman’s club owner, Cosmo Vitelli, desperately committed to maintaining a facade of suave gentility despite the seediness of his environment and his own unhealthy appetites. When he runs afoul of loan sharks, Cosmo must carry out a terrible crime or lose his way of life. Mesmerizing and idiosyncratic, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie is a provocative examination of masculine identity. It is presented here in two versions: Cassavetes’s original 1976 edit and his 1978 one, nearly thirty minutes shorter.

    OPENING NIGHT (1977)

  • 144 minutes
  • Color
  • Monaural
  • 1.85:1 aspect ratio. While in the midst of rehearsals for her latest play, Broadway actor Myrtle Gordon (A Woman Under the Influence’s Gena Rowlands) witnesses the accidental death of an adoring young fan, after which she begins to confront the chaos of her own life. Headlined by a virtuoso performance by Rowlands, John Cassavetes’s Opening Night lays bare the drama of a performer who, at great personal cost, makes a part her own, and it functions as a metaphor for the director’s singular, wrenched-from-the-heart creative method.

    Sinopsis

Captain Solomon Kane is a brutally efficient 16th Century killing machine. Armed with his signature pistols, cutlass and rapier, he and his men unleash their bloodlust as they fight for England in war after war on all continents. As the story opens, Kane and his band of pillagers are carving a bloody path through hordes of defenders in an exotic city in northern Africa. But, when Kane decides to attack a mysterious nearby castle to plunder its rumored riches, his mission takes a fateful turn. One by one, Kane's men are picked off by demonic creatures until he alone is left to face the Devil's own Reaper -- dispatched from the depths of Hell to lay claim to his hopelessly corrupt soul. Though Kane at last manages to escape, he knows that he now must redeem himself by renouncing violence and devoting himself wholly to a life of peace and purity. It took three years for Solomon Kane to appear on a North American movie screen, but while such delays aren't usually a good sign, this rousing tale starring pulp fiction author Robert E. Howard's character is sure to find favor among fans of the fantasy-adventure genre. The year 1600, we're told, is "a time of witchcraft and sorcery, [when] no one stood against evil"--and there's lots of evil, as the devil himself is at large, with an ever-growing army of recruits to help him plunder men's souls. When we meet Kane (James Purefoy), he's the baddest of the bad, a filthy, ruthless killer happy to sacrifice his own men in the pursuit of untold riches. A year or so later, though, he's changed his ways; now a man of peace who'd just as soon spend the rest of his life in a humble monastery, he vows to never fight again. Yeah, right. Banished from his refuge and told to seek his path to redemption, he hits the road and is helped out by a kindly family whose daughter is kidnapped and son slaughtered by some murderous demons, whereupon the girl's mother urges him to find her--a task that will clearly be well beyond the means of a pacifist. Thereafter, as our hero's epic journey ultimately leads him to Malachi, the devil's overlord and now the occupant of the very castle where Kane grew up, the story takes a number of somewhat predictable but still entertaining twists (including one involving Kane's family, who banished him years before). The video game violence is pervasive, as are the dark and dreary landscapes through which he travels (does it ever stop raining in England?), but the effects and makeup are first-rate, and the vibe is appropriately creepy and portentous. As for the sequels that director-writer Michael J. Bassett is obviously planning on… well, perhaps not. But in the meantime, Solomon Kane will do. --Sam Graham

The full title is Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, which should give you an idea of the tone of this stop-action animated musical/fantasy/horror/comedy. It is based on characters created by Burton, the former Disney animator best known as the director of Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and the first two Batman movies. His benignly scary-funny sensibility dominates the story of Halloweentown resident Jack Skellington (voice by Danny Elfman, who also wrote the songs), who stumbles on a bizarre and fascinating alternative universe called ... Christmastown! Directed by Henry Selick (who later made the delightful James and the Giant Peach), this PG-rated picture has a reassuringly light touch. As Roger Ebert noted in his review, "some of the Halloween creatures might be a tad scary for smaller children, but this is the kind of movie older kids will eat up; it has the kind of offbeat, subversive energy that tells them wonderful things are likely to happen." --Jim Emerson

    Sinopsis

A U.S. President itching to start a war... A confidential report telling the Administration the opposite of what it wants to hear... A Beltway wife outed to the press as a CIA operative... And another woman, a hotshot reporter, threatened with jail because she won't reveal her source... Yes, it does sound like the Bush-era case of Valerie Plame and New York Times journalist Judith Miller--and by the time you make it to the end of writer-director Rod Lurie's latest inside-Washington shadowplay, you may wish he'd served up that real-life story instead of half-baked fiction. Kate Beckinsale plays the reporter, a rising star with a ponytail and a Pulitzer-worthy scoop, "Watergate and Iran-Contra combined." The film's best scenes have her tussling with the Plame figure (the formidable Vera Farmiga). Lurie makes them soccer moms whose kids play together--a proto-feminist gesture befitting the creator of The Contender (the movie with Joan Allen as a Vice Presidential nominee battling a sex scandal) and Commander-in-Chief (the short-lived TV series featuring Geena Davis as America's first woman President). Nothing but the Truth trumpets its this-wouldn't-happen-to-a-man outrage but resorts to woman's-picture subplots involving weak, unreliable spouses--then compounds the lapse by leaving the male roles underdeveloped. Lurie seems to be working his way down a checklist of themes (sexism, the need to protect the freedom of the press, the way lives get left behind by the 48-hour news cycle) and possible impacts a person in Beckinsale's position might experience. Finally, his film is a make-your-own-movie kit leaving the viewer free to focus on favorite ingredients. Apart from Beckinsale and Farmiga, the name cast (Angela Bassett, Noah Wyle, et al.) is mostly reduced to revving their engines, though Matt Dillon scores as a special prosecutor mixing folksiness and cold calculation, while Alan Alda gets to showboat as a legendary defense attorney. The widescreen setups abound in irritating mannerisms and pointless foreground clutter, but since cameraman Alik Sakharov did clean work throughout the epic run of HBO's The Sopranos, the blame must lie with the director. And that's the truth. --Richard T. Jameson

    Sinopsis

With unforgettable characters, thrilling adventures, soaring Academy Award-winning music (1989: Best Music, Original Score, and Best Music, Original Song, Under The Sea.), The Little Mermaid is one of the most celebrated animated films of all time. Now spectacularly transformed for the first time on Blu-ray with digitally restored picture and brilliant high-definition sound! Venture under the sea where Ariel, a free-spirited mermaid princess, longs to be part of the human world. After bravely striking a bargain with Ursula, a sneaky sea witch, Ariel embarks on the adventure of a lifetime. With Flounder and Sebastian at her side, Ariel will need all of her courage and determination to make things right in both her worlds. From the moment that Prince Eric's ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow, suddenly recaptured that "magic" that had been dormant for thirty years. In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to "spend a day, warm on the sand," Ariel trades her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch (classically voiced by Pat Carroll), for a pair of legs. Ariel can only succeed if she receives true love's kiss in a few day's time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian, a loudmouth seagull, and a flounder. The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form: witty and relevant, and they advance the story (go on, hum a few bars of "Under the Sea"). Mermaid put animation back on the studio's "to do" list and was responsible for ushering Beauty and the Beast to theaters. A modern Disney classic. --Keith Simanton

    Sinopsis

A pair of siblings (Ministry of Fear’s Ray Milland and The Philadelphia Story’s Ruth Hussey) from London purchase a surprisingly affordable, lonely cliff-top house in Cornwall, only to discover that it actually carries a ghostly price; soon they’re caught up in a bizarre romantic triangle from beyond the grave. Rich in atmosphere, THE UNINVITED, directed by Lewis Allen (Suddenly), was groundbreaking for the seriousness with which it treated the haunted-house genre, and it remains an elegant and eerie experience, featuring a classic score by Victor Young (Written on the Wind). A tragic family past, a mysteriously locked room, cold chills, bumps in the night—this gothic Hollywood classic has it all.One of the spookiest ghost stories ever put to film, The Uninvited is also one of the few classic haunted-house movies to treat the subject with respect and seriousness. Ray Milland and Ruth Hussey play a brother and sister who leave the city to live in a beautiful old house dramatically perched on a cliff overlooking the Cornish coast. As they discover some of the house's peculiarities--the unexplained chill that settles in certain rooms, the aroma of mimosas that wafts through the house, flowers that wilt when brought inside--they are told by local girl Gail Russell that the house is haunted, by the spirit of Russell's mother no less. The rationalist city folk first scoff at the idea but as Milland slowly falls in love with the frightened girl he investigates the legends and discovers some startling hidden truths. Donald Crisp costars as Russell's humorless, hard-bitten grandfather who forbids her visits to the house. Handsomely shot against the beautiful Cornish countryside, director Lewis Allen wisely suggests more than he shows and the uneasy tone and quietly restrained direction looks forward to such films as The Haunting and The Legend of Hell House. Though Allen ultimately reveals a suitably spine-tingling apparition, some of the film's best moments are chilling in their simplicity: nocturnal moans, slamming doors, and the dog's whimpering fear of the upstairs. --Sean Axmaker

    Solomon Kane

    Solomon Kane Review

The We and the I Review

    Sinopsis

Workshopped with a group of teens from The Bronx over the course of 3 years, Michel Gondry's The We and The I gives an inside look into the dynamics, drama and hilarity that emerge on a real-time bus ride.

It is the last day of the school year, and a group of Bronx high-schoolers board a city bus to make their way home. With the summer break ahead, and feeling more liberated than usual, this colorful crowd of kids - the cool ones, the outsiders, and everyone in between - act out as only teens can when they are among their peers and away from authority figures. Oblivious to the grown-ups in their midst, (who are smart enough to either get out of the way or get off the bus entirely), they gossip and gloat, brag and bully, cajole and confide, exchange truths and tall tales, and spar verbally and physically. In short, they are unapologetically themselves at this pivotal point in their lives when the pressures and realities of adulthood have yet to turn them into someone else.

    Killing Lincoln

    Killing Lincoln Review

    >

    Sinopsis

Based on The New York Times best-selling novel, Killing Lincoln is the suspenseful, eye-opening story of the events surrounding the assassination of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. While some aspects of the plot to slay Lincoln and cripple the newly forming union are widely known, much more of the history unfolds in this insightful thriller. As actor John Wilkes Booth becomes increasingly obsessed with removing Lincoln from office, a secret cabal forms, and ultimately empowers Booth to carry out an event that will change America forever. Narrated by Oscarr Winner Tom Hanks and produced by Tony Scott and Ridley Scott, this historical masterpiece stars Billy Campbell (TV's The Killing) in a spectacular turn as President Lincoln. It's dramatic, but not exactly a drama; it's factual, but not a documentary; it's a reenactment, but not really a feature film. However you choose to describe Killing Lincoln, based on the book coauthored by Fox News' Bill O'Reilly, it is a compelling account of what many would contend is still the most notorious crime in American history. One needn't be an expert to be familiar with the basics of the story: on April 14, 1865, actor John Wilkes Booth (portrayed here by Jesse Johnson, son of Don) assassinated Abraham Lincoln (Daniel Day-Lewis's performance in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln pretty much obliterated anyone else's, before or since, but Billy Campbell is very good) while the president was attending a play at Ford's Theater in Washington D.C. Booth then leapt from the stage, injuring his leg in the process, and was hunted down and killed several days later (a self-important blowhard, he expected to be hailed as a hero; instead, he became a villain to rival Benedict Arnold). But casual history buffs may not know some of the other fascinating details presented here (on- and off-camera) by narrator Tom Hanks. For instance, in a scenario straight out of The Godfather, Booth and his coconspirators planned to kill not only Lincoln but also Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William Seward on the same night; even then, Booth had turned to murder only after first plotting to kidnap Lincoln and deliver him to the Confederate army. Of course, although the filmmakers (including director Ridley Scott and his late brother, Tony) seem scrupulous in their attention to the facts, as a making-of bonus segment makes clear, we can't know for sure if every private discussion is re-created verbatim. Indeed, too much of the dialogue comes across as speechifying instead of normal conversation. But Hanks lends considerable gravitas to the proceedings, the production values are excellent, and although Killing Lincoln tries a bit too hard to be portentous (there are countless variations on "Abraham Lincoln has 11 days to live"), it does a fine job of turning an event with a very well-known conclusion into a tense and exciting thriller. --Sam Graham
