There's a third wheel: Biaggio (Moises Arias), a strange and hilarious kid who just keeps hanging around long enough to be allowed in to the idyll. What follows is a very peculiar mix of styles (gauzy nature photography, boom-boom sitcom-style humor, bittersweet teen-movie angst), but director Jordan Vogt-Roberts keeps these different notes in harmony for most of the film's running time. Add the rock-solid support of comedy wizards like Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, and Mary Lynn Rajskub, and the movie finds a winning beat. At its best, The Kings of Summer is like a Young Adult novel about getting away from it all, but with a better soundtrack. --Robert Horton

Even breakfast is an adventure when you're the last surviving prehistoric family, and the conviction that fear keeps you alive and curiosity will get you killed definitely drives the Crood clan. But Eep (Emma Stone), who's in many ways a typical teenager intent on testing her boundaries and the resolve of her parents (Nicolas Cage and Catherine Keener), yearns for more than hiding out in a dark cave all day. Eep sneaks out of the cave one night and almost gets the whole family killed, but her path crosses with a boy named Guy (Ryan Reynolds), who it seems is destined to change everything for the Crood family. Forced to flee their cave home after it's destroyed, the Croods reluctantly follow Guy on a perilous journey that leads them to discover a whole new world full of breathtaking views, fascinating creatures, and blood-stirring adventure. The animation is lush and gorgeous and the abundance of physical and slapstick humor, especially from Nicolas Cage as Grug and Cloris Leachman as Gran, keeps the plot moving and viewers chuckling throughout the film. What the Crood family's journey eventually reveals is twofold: that focusing on living life and following the light is a viable alternative to hiding in the darkness and that anyone can change. A year or so later, though, he's changed his ways; now a man of peace who'd just as soon spend the rest of his life in a humble monastery, he vows to never fight again. Yeah, right. Banished from his refuge and told to seek his path to redemption, he hits the road and is helped out by a kindly family whose daughter is kidnapped and son slaughtered by some murderous demons, whereupon the girl's mother urges him to find her--a task that will clearly be well beyond the means of a pacifist. Thereafter, as our hero's epic journey ultimately leads him to Malachi, the devil's overlord and now the occupant of the very castle where Kane grew up, the story takes a number of somewhat predictable but still entertaining twists (including one involving Kane's family, who banished him years before). The video game violence is pervasive, as are the dark and dreary landscapes through which he travels (does it ever stop raining in England?), but the effects and makeup are first-rate, and the vibe is appropriately creepy and portentous. As for the sequels that director-writer Michael J. Bassett is obviously planning on… well, perhaps not. But in the meantime, Solomon Kane will do. --Sam Graham

Nothing but the Truth trumpets its this-wouldn't-happen-to-a-man outrage but resorts to woman's-picture subplots involving weak, unreliable spouses--then compounds the lapse by leaving the male roles underdeveloped. Lurie seems to be working his way down a checklist of themes (sexism, the need to protect the freedom of the press, the way lives get left behind by the 48-hour news cycle) and possible impacts a person in Beckinsale's position might experience. Finally, his film is a make-your-own-movie kit leaving the viewer free to focus on favorite ingredients. Apart from Beckinsale and Farmiga, the name cast (Angela Bassett, Noah Wyle, et al.) is mostly reduced to revving their engines, though Matt Dillon scores as a special prosecutor mixing folksiness and cold calculation, while Alan Alda gets to showboat as a legendary defense attorney. The widescreen setups abound in irritating mannerisms and pointless foreground clutter, but since cameraman Alik Sakharov did clean work throughout the epic run of HBO's The Sopranos, the blame must lie with the director. However you choose to describe Killing Lincoln, based on the book coauthored by Fox News' Bill O'Reilly, it is a compelling account of what many would contend is still the most notorious crime in American history. One needn't be an expert to be familiar with the basics of the story: on April 14, 1865, actor John Wilkes Booth (portrayed here by Jesse Johnson, son of Don) assassinated Abraham Lincoln (Daniel Day-Lewis's performance in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln pretty much obliterated anyone else's, before or since, but Billy Campbell is very good) while the president was attending a play at Ford's Theater in Washington D.C. Booth then leapt from the stage, injuring his leg in the process, and was hunted down and killed several days later (a self-important blowhard, he expected to be hailed as a hero; instead, he became a villain to rival Benedict Arnold). But casual history buffs may not know some of the other fascinating details presented here (on- and off-camera) by narrator Tom Hanks. For instance, in a scenario straight out of The Godfather, Booth and his coconspirators planned to kill not only Lincoln but also Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William Seward on the same night; even then, Booth had turned to murder only after first plotting to kidnap Lincoln and deliver him to the Confederate army. Of course, although the filmmakers (including director Ridley Scott and his late brother, Tony) seem scrupulous in their attention to the facts, as a making-of bonus segment makes clear, we can't know for sure if every private discussion is re-created verbatim. Indeed, too much of the dialogue comes across as speechifying instead of normal conversation. But Hanks lends considerable gravitas to the proceedings, the production values are excellent, and although Killing Lincoln tries a bit too hard to be portentous (there are countless variations on "Abraham Lincoln has 11 days to live"), it does a fine job of turning an event with a very well-known conclusion into a tense and exciting thriller. --Sam Graham

The shell of tattoos and leather jacket Luke hides under can't disguise the effect this new reality has on him. He decides to stick around and try to weasel into the role of being a father, turning to bank robbery as a means of providing the support he believes he must. The story's second act abruptly leaves Luke behind, shifting the focus to Avery (Bradley Cooper), a rookie local cop with a law degree who truly wants to do good, even though police corruption is endemic even on the nice streets he patrols in his placid place beyond the pines. Avery also has a new son, but as much as Luke yearned to shower love on his boy, circumstances have led Avery to shut down and deny any feeling toward his child or his wife (Rose Byrne). Part three takes place 15 years later, when fate brings the two boys together and the legacy left to them by their fathers comes home to roost in an equally unpredictable fashion. AJ and Jason (Emory Cohen and Dane DeHaan) are thrown together in the unpleasantly realistic dance of teenage angst as Avery and Luke's sons. They are at first unaware of their fathers' association until the inevitable revelation and partial role reversal that winds the movie down. All the performances are terrific and Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper are at the top of their game, though their interaction is limited to one brief sequence. Gosling feels a little typecast as the moody, stone-faced, quick-tempered guy we've seen him play before, but his entire body is engaged in the way he snaps from calm to rage at the emotions brewing inside. Cooper is restrained and playing somewhat against type as a man who should be the hero, even though he's got more villain in him than the movie outright admits. Cianfrance displays an enormous advance as an auteur. The Place Beyond the Pines may not be the fully realized work he intended, but it is an absorbing and often deeply moving exercise in family dynamics and destinies that are never certain. --Ted Fry

Claire Bloom is an offbeat love interest, and a bearded Oskar Werner is an East German investigator on Burton's case (the pecking order in the Communist spy hierarchy is a source of black humor). Director Martin Ritt extends his unvarnished approach to the movie's stripped-down look, which means that Richard Burton is constantly in a harsh, unflattering light.
